How Are Engineered rPET Substrates Integrated Into Vehicle Interior Components?

June 23, 2026

Introduction

Acoustic felt is not a generic fabric; it is a highly versatile, application-specific substrate engineered for multi-layered cabin components. Tier suppliers and converters utilize rPET acoustic felt variations across several critical zones within the vehicle cabin to manage structural vibration, isolate airborne noise, and reinforce composite parts.

Core Industrial Execution Zones

1. Trunk Liner Backing & Boot-Side Trim Support

Trunk systems require materials that can support heavy structural loads while maintaining a quiet cabin interface. High-density felt provides the required stiffness, moldability, and backing strength for luggage compartment floor structures and wheel house covers.

2. Under-Carpet Acoustic Decoupling

Positioned beneath the primary cabin floor carpet, heavy-duty acoustic felt acts as an under-carpet noise barrier. It provides crucial decoupling performance, blocking structural frequencies originating from the powertrain and tire resonance before they enter the passenger compartment.

3. Wheel-Arch Acoustic Liners

The wheel well is directly exposed to gravel impact, water splash, and road noise. High-exposure rPET felt variants are engineered to deaden these intense localized sounds, acting as a lightweight, durable shield that integrates seamlessly into downstream thermal workflows.

4. Parcel Shelf Substrates

When blended with nonwoven layers, felt serves as a rigid carrier for rear package trays. It ensures long-term shape retention and prevents sagging under thermal stress while absorbing secondary sound reflections from the rear window glass.

Processing & Conversion Compatibility

For component converters, Lenark’s rPET felt configurations are optimized for automated manufacturing lines. The material supports uniform resin impregnation, consistent flame-lamination, and crisp die-cutting, ensuring clean edges and exact dimensional accuracy for complex vehicle interior profiles.
